SERP Features Explained: All the Blocks That Steal Your Clicks
By OnPageSEO.ai Team

A SERP feature is anything on a Google results page that is not a plain blue link. Featured snippets, People Also Ask, image carousels, map packs, AI Overviews — they now occupy most of the space above the fold on a huge share of searches.
This is why position one no longer guarantees the traffic it once did. If an AI Overview and four People Also Ask boxes sit above you, your "first place" result might be the sixth thing a person sees.
The features that matter most
| Feature | What it is | Effect on your clicks |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overview | AI-generated answer at the very top | Large reduction — often answers the query outright |
| Featured snippet | A boxed direct answer above result one | Wins clicks if you own it, costs them if a rival does |
| People Also Ask | Expandable related questions | Pushes organic down; a source of content ideas |
| Local pack | Map with three business listings | Dominates local intent; organic becomes secondary |
| Image pack | Row of image results | Matters for visual and product queries |
| Video | YouTube or video carousel | Strong for how-to and demo searches |
| Sitelinks | Sub-links under a result | Boosts your own branded result |
| Reviews | Star ratings in the result | Meaningfully raises CTR |
| Discussions & forums | Reddit and forum threads | Growing fast; signals people want real opinions |
How to win a featured snippet
Featured snippets are the most winnable feature because they are pulled from pages already ranking on page one. If you are in the top ten, you are eligible.
- Find keywords where a snippet exists and you rank 2–10. Those are your candidates.
- Answer the question directly, immediately. Put a 40–55 word direct answer right beneath a heading that matches the question.
- Match the format Google is already showing. Paragraph snippet, use a paragraph. List snippet, use a real list. Table snippet, use a table.
- Use the question as the heading. An H2 phrased exactly as the query makes the match obvious.
- Keep it self-contained. The passage should make sense with no surrounding context.
AI Overviews: the new reality
AI Overviews summarise an answer at the top of the page, often removing the need to click at all. They are appearing on a rapidly growing share of informational queries.
You cannot opt in, but the pages cited in AI Overviews tend to share traits: clear factual statements, well-structured headings, genuine expertise, and content that answers precisely rather than padding. The practical response is to shift some effort toward commercial and transactional intent, where AI Overviews appear less often and clicks still convert.
What to do with this
- Audit which SERP features appear on your ranked keywords — the mix tells you what kind of SERP you are competing in.
- Prioritise featured snippets on keywords where you already rank 2–10.
- Treat People Also Ask questions as a content outline handed to you for free.
- If local packs dominate your terms, your effort belongs in local SEO, not organic.
- Watch for clicks falling while position holds — that is a feature appearing above you.
OnPageSEO.ai shows the SERP features present for every keyword you rank for, so you can see exactly which results are being intercepted before they reach you.
