Domain Authority vs Authority Score: What These Numbers Really Mean

By OnPageSEO.ai Team

Domain Authority vs Authority Score

Domain authority is a 0–100 score predicting how likely a website is to rank, based mainly on its backlink profile. Moz popularised the term; other tools have their own versions — Authority Score, Domain Rating, Domain Power. They all attempt the same thing and none of them come from Google.

What actually goes into the score

  • Referring domains — how many distinct websites link to you. This is the heaviest input almost everywhere.
  • Link quality — a link from a strong, relevant site counts for vastly more than a directory listing.
  • Total backlinks — matters much less than the number of distinct domains.
  • Spam signals — obviously manipulated profiles get discounted.
  • Organic footprint — some tools blend in estimated traffic or ranking keywords.

Note that content quality, page speed, user experience and relevance are largely absent. That is why a site can hold a strong authority score and still rank poorly — and why a focused new site with excellent content can beat a high-authority generalist on a specific query.

The scale is not linear

Moving from 20 to 30 is achievable in months. Moving from 70 to 80 can take years and enormous investment. The curve steepens sharply as you climb, so treat gains at the top of the range as a completely different order of effort.

ScoreTypical siteWhat it means practically
0–20New or small siteNormal at the start. Compete on long-tail and specificity.
21–40Established small businessCan win focused, lower-competition terms.
41–60Strong regional or niche brandCompetitive for most commercial terms in the niche.
61–80Major national brandRanks broadly with modest effort.
81–100Wikipedia, Amazon, major mediaEffectively a different competitive league.

How to use it without being misled

  1. Use it comparatively. Your score next to the sites currently ranking for your target keyword is the useful reading.
  2. Track your own trend. Rising over months means your link profile is improving. The absolute number matters less.
  3. Never buy links to raise it. You are optimising a third-party metric while risking a Google penalty — the worst possible trade.
  4. Do not compare across tools. Different indexes, different formulas, different curves.
  5. Remember page-level beats site-level. A specific, well-linked page can outrank a stronger domain on a specific query.

How to actually raise it

There is no shortcut, and everything that genuinely works is also good for your business: publish things worth citing, earn coverage, get listed in real industry directories, build genuine partnerships, and fix your internal linking so authority flows to the pages that matter.

OnPageSEO.ai shows your Authority Score alongside referring domains and your full backlink profile, so you can see what is driving the number rather than just watching it move.
